Wear is the degradation of certain items' materials over time. Clothing will slowly wear out when being used, subject to damage, or through natural decay. Using equipment, such as weapons and armor, can wear them down. Wear alters the value of an item, and it eventually will be destroyed.

Thanks for the help though. one possibility is clutter, when there's not enough stockpile space so food items get left in the kitchen where they rot (food does not rot in stockpiles). the other possibility is slow/unskilled chef, who is taking too damn long cooking.

Re: Miasma, dead animals, priority. For the dead giant hamster, check if the body is located in a non-pathable tile. All workshops have some non-pathable tiles, and statues and archery targets are also non-pathable. If an item lands in one of those tiles, your dwarfs cannot get to the item and you need to deconstruct the building.Dwarves don't pick up more then one tool if it still works like classic, this was also a problem in getting military dwarves to pick up a weapon, they just couldn't let go of their beloved tool.
