Whitesides received the A.B. degree from Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, in 1960, and the Ph.D. degree from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, in 1964. He was a Mallinckrodt Professor of Chemistry from 1982 to 2004. He is currently a Woodford L. and Ann A. Flowers University Professor.
