Recently had the oil changed and the carbs cleaned and it runs as good as the day I bought it new. This bike is almost bulletproof.

If it actually does have a dead spot, rebuild kit will not help. 3. Troubleshoot the problem in order to find and repair only the fault that is present. 1. Turning the ignition key every lamp that should turn on, turned on. 2. When pushing the start button, the starter motor engages as it should. 3. 3 out of 4 times (approx) the engine doesnt fire. Not so much as a fart or misfire. 4. The 4th time (approx) the engine starts right away exactly as it used to.Check for oil around the spark plug cavity and then explore this further. On the 1500, the service manul says a special tool is need to pull the spark plug tubes, but you can fashion a tool out of the rear axle nut and unscrew the tube. I'd bet the 800 is similar. If engine has spark and compression, pour a small amount up to 1/2 ounce into the carburetor throat. Choking. You should find a knurled ring at the base of the choke knob (the holder I guess is the word) which may be covered by a rubber cover. Plug fouling is just part of owning a Vulcan 800, and it's way worse if you make short trips or you're just starting the engine to let it run a little then turning it off. The plugs never get hot enough to burn off the carbon and they just foul. That is normal even on a bone stock VN800., Bandit101. If the 100 ohm resister at the ignition switch was bad or removed, it still would not prevent power from going to the ignition and lights. It just reduces voltage to the igniter to turn it on.
